New Years Home Renewal

Week one of the New Year down! The start of a new year is the perfect time to take inventory of our lives. Holding onto un-needed items, unhealthy habits, thoughts and behaviors hold us back from reaching our full potential and goals. And just looks bad!

Getting rid of old, unused items in our homes is one way to lighten the weight of things that literally and figuratively bog us down. For some reason, we humans carry the weight of our stuff along with us in our minds, adding to the hundreds of other things we deal with on a daily basis. Clearing your space and switching things around breaks up and frees stale energy patterns and allows us to think a bit better on the things that really matter.

Here are some things to keep in mind as you go:

-Access your needs as you clean. Think of how you actually use your space, what has been working and what has not?  Keep doing what works, stop what doesn’t and make a game plan.

-Would certain items be more convenient if moved somewhere else? Ex: files in the bedroom staring you down when you are trying to sleep? Finding another area to put them may make it better to tackle when needed and more relaxing at bedtime.

-Consolidate & store similar things together, ex: Do you have holiday decorations and supplies in various places or cleaning supplies in the kitchen, bathroom AND closets? Unless you have a rhyme and reason that works, this usually wastes time looking for what you need or money buying duplicates of what you can’t find. Pick the spot that makes most sense.

-Do you have blank or unused space somewhere in your home, an entry way or large wall? Use it! Add some shelves, use a screen, take advantage of the areas that could solve your problems and make your life a bit easier.

-Worried about what to do with things that you no longer need or use? Don’t throw everything away, donate them or recycle with a tag sale in Spring!

English: Yard sale on Green Street in .

Our homes/work spaces are supposed to be places that work for us, for relaxation, comfort and or success. Don’t let a build up of clutter prevent you from getting the most out of it.

  1. Great advice! As much as I love the holidays and all the decorations all over the house, the day when we take everything down and put it away until next year I always feel this refreshing sense of spaciousness, with all the clutter gone, and I end up looking around for other things that are no longer serving a purpose, particularly things that, if donated to someone else, could be useful.
