Photos of the Week!

Image
So as some of you may know, aside from crafting body products, I'm also an environmental educator.  I help people learn about gardening and sustainable practices for their homes and schools .  I love this aspect of my life, getting dirty and "being one with nature" fills me with a calming sense of purpose. The process of finding out who I am was touch as I was conflicted with what others thought I should be and how I felt about my strengths, passion and what I wanted to do with my time on the planet. I've gone through so many changes in career which is a needed thing for some. I'm helping a family member go through this exploratory phase, hoping she can let go of some of the fear and hesitation and go through this journey with an open mind and heart to her personal destination. Here are a few photos of where my week goes. Enjoy! Potential Garden site for a school in the Bronx. A moldy Tulip tree leaf. I'm trying to find out what causes...

HAPPY EARTH WEEK!!

Image
One of my favorite new calender events!  We need to pause and recognize our interdependence with nature.  Since the first Earth Day in 1970, concerned people around the world have found ways to reconnect with our responsibility to be stewards of the planet.  Now-a-days it's very easy to find ways to  be kind for the health of the planet and ourselves. The two ways I reconnect is through  my products and my work in environmental education.  How do you reconnect? In the lab, ready to make my all natural products                My daytime job at garden for kids

How Clean is Clean? ~ Eco Tuesday

Image
April is Earth Month, an expansion on the action-orientated principles of Earth Day , which was conceptualized in 1969.  The basic idea is to protect our environment by being aware and conservative in our use of resources. This can take many forms, from eating healthy through local sources, supporting businesses that promote sustainable practices and realizing the options available to us as consumers.   When I'm cleaning my home, I cringe every time I have to dump a bucketful of chemical filled dirty water down the drain, knowing it could end up in our water system.  Though most of our water gets treated to remove harmful particles before we use it again (our water is a process of recycling ya know), sometimes the water doesn't make it to the treatment plant .  Sometimes, due to poor city infrastructure, it gets washed back out into our waterways during a heavy rain or seeps into the ground in our communities or overflows into our streets from ...

My Worms are Such Pigs!

Image
So I have a worm-bin in my kitchen and would never have thought that worms were such voracious eaters! A few years ago I decided to change a few things in my life in order to live a greener lifestyle.  I called it "The Beazer Challenge", and I attempted to tackle issues related to energy efficiency, toxic chemical in the home, eating healthier, and consumer habits. These were things I thought were easy to manage on a small scale but that would add up to benefits for myself and community on whole. I will post more on these topics soon. But back to the worms...I decided to learn about indoor composting as a result of my attempt to eat healthy. Buying and eating more fruits and veggies was great, wasting them due to over stocking my fridge was not. I was wasting food and money in my green mission. At the time I had turtles who helped me consume my produce, but after they left it was just me with tons of greens. then I heard about worm composting which is a way ...

Why Vote For My Project?

To those who know me, you understand that I've always had goals of wanting to help make the world a better place. Those lofty, idealistic thoughts from my youth led to the honing of my skills, academically, professionally and socially to better bring those ideals into reality. To those who don't know me that well, I've worked and volunteered with many environmental, educational and community based organizations most of my adult life. But in every job I've had, I felt as if I were in service to the community. This project idea has been brewing in my head for many years and winning this grant would be an opportunity for me to directly give something to my community.   Remember to vote daily! Vote by texting 106910 to Pepsi (73774) to vote from your mobile phone, by using the mobile site, m.refresheverything.com, and by power voting with special codes from select Pepsi products that enables up to 100 votes a day on Pepsi Refresh page: http://www.refreshe...
